The parents were quite impressed with the skills our children showed and could see the pride beaming from their faces. It was a blessed and fun event to wrap up another successful year.

Life is hard for the poor folk of rural Mississippi, and African Americans are among the poorest of those poor. To help the children of the rural poor break the chains of poverty and racism, Mendenhall Ministries founded Genesis One Christian School. The school has always been close to my heart, and I was happy that my son Ryan had a chance to attend it. So I was glad that our foundation was able to support a new ministry headed up by Mrs. Kincaid, a former teacher at Genesis One.

When I told Ryan that I was going to visit Mrs. Kincaid, he was eager to go with me. We drove about forty miles from Jackson, Mississippi, to the little town of Morton, and then about two miles farther out into the country. When we came to a two-story house, Ryan said, “daddy, that’s the one we’re looking for.” We got out and knocked on the door.

Mrs. Kincaid came to the door and greeted us, giving Ryan a big hug. She invited us in and told us about the things she was doing. “Since I left Genesis One four years ago,” she said, “I’ve been operating a day-care center here. But what this community really needs is a school like Genesis One, and I’m going to start one. I don’t know where the money will come from, but we’re already broken ground for the new schoolhouse. Do you see that freshly graded space across the road? I’m trusting God to get it built right there.”

It’s always a good idea to approach a new project or a change in my life with careful thought and prudent planning. But there are times when, after thought and prayer, we have to have the courage to follow our vision, work hard to clear the ground and trust God to “get it built right there.”

Lord, give me the courage to walk out in faith to answer Your call.
